Melbourne startup DivorceRight wants to make divorce cheaper, more efficient and more amicable

DivorceRight is the brain-child of Anne-Marie Cade, who has been constantly hearing clients complain about the cost of legal fees in family law matters and frustrating long legal process. The widespread stereotype of lawyers in pop culture as smug and greedy, stretching out cases for as long as possible to get as much money as they can are also reasons why many dread legal processes.

Startup DivorceRight looks to find a better way to deal with the issue of divorce and separation with the launch of a dedicated site www.divorceright.com.au. DivorceRight aims to focus on healing instead of legal wrangling to make the divorce process as easy as possible and keep families out of court.

It recognizes that divorce is not only a legal issue but has financial and emotional implications associated with the whole process. The platform connect families with mediators, lawyers, accountants, counsellors and psychologists through a single platform that encourages settlement and resolution through a process of consultation and mediation for a fixed cost.

The startup does this by completing much of the divorce process online, where clients lodge forms and interact with each other and their lawyers and mediators online through a client portal. Paperwork associated with each divorce is filed on the DivorceRight platform for easy reference. Clients are also able to receive and send notifications and messages, view the status of their cases, schedule conferences and pay bills online.

DivorceRight is based in Melbourne and owned by Australian lawyer Anne-Marie Cade of Victorian online legal firm Daniel Lew Le Mercier & Co. Anne-Marie began her law practice, Le Mercier Legal & Conveyancing, in 2006 before taking over the practice of South Yarra lawyer Daniel Lew in 2013. She has since expanded by putting her practice online, and was this year named a finalist in the Lexis Nexis Legal Innovation Index.

The company currently operates in Victoria only, but will soon be expanding to New South Wales in the coming month, and from there, all over Australia.
