Warning: Data retention compliance costs could force up consumer Internet charges

[1] Major Internet and Telco bodies have criticized the federal government’s promised allocation of just $131 million to meet the compliance costs of its mandatory data retention push.

[2] Their argument is that the $131 million is way too low to cover the costs of compliance that will be incurred by telecommunications and internet providers.

[3] The Society CEO Laurie Patton said that the small amount will force the providers to pass on the increased costs to consumers.
