Metadata laws head to Senate

[1] The controversial data retention laws have sailed through federal parliament’s lower house after the government agreed to a last-minute concession protecting journalists.

[2] Members of Parliament approved the legislation requiring telcos to retain customer data for a period of two years.

[3] Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull reiterated that the move was a safeguard to provide ample protections for journalists.
