Australia’s consumer watchdog ACCC shoots down new ihail taxi app

[1] ACCC has blocked the taxi-hailing smartphone app, ihail app, submitted as a proposal from major taxi companies because of fears that it would reduce competition and “produce significant public detriments”.

[2] The app proposal had been submitted to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission by Silver Top Taxi Service, Yellow Cabs, Black and White Cabs, Suburban Taxis and Cabcharge in May.

[3] According to ACCC, the app is convenient for the taxi operators, but largely designed to compete with Uber and other app-based taxi industry disruptors.
