Brisbane startup Obzervr helps mining and energy companies track environmental data through the cloud

Despite huge investments and sophistication in modern technology in the energy and mining industry, many companies are still collecting big amounts of environmental field data using pen and paper. In addition, many environmental laboratories are implementing head office solutions, but at no stage is any data actually coming in from a mobile device. This significantly delays data use and analysis coming from the field.

Tania Walter, after working for many years in the oil and gas industries watching scientists collect data on paper, created Obzervr to automate the collection and validation of field data. Obzervr is a platform that allows for scientists to effectively manage mobile workforce assignments, including sample collection, environmental assessments, safety assessments, site inspections and audits, among others.

The platform is available across the web and mobile, and allows for users to report on organisational compliance and environmental management to concerned parties, collect data on the lifecycle of land, conduct risk assessments and manage workflow. Users are also able to use the platform offline, where data is synced when online.

The startup is Brisbane based and a fully owned Australian company. It was founded six months ago by Tania Walter, who then partnered with co-founder Marc Walter, a programmer.

Obzervr initially worked with a model that allows companies to pay for what they use – each time a user went to a location to do testing – but have since started a monthly subscription for larger companies who wanted to be able to budget for the financial year.

Obzervr’s clients include Healthy Waterways, The Department of Science, Innovation, and Technology, and Pentair, among others. The startup has also partnered with companies, such as Eagle.io and Prospect Group. On the international scene, Obzervr has been picked up by a company in Atlanta, Georgia – a positive direction to its international expansion plans.
