Australian researchers create an autonomous robot to scan the steel structures of Sydney Harbour Bridge

[1] Australian researchers have created an autonomous robot that is providing engineers with high-definition images of the integrity of steel structures that support the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge.

[2] Researchers at Sydney’s University of Technology (UTS) developed the new robot, dubbed ‘CROC’, with funding and engineering support from the NSW Roads and Maritime Services.

[3] CROC uses a magnetic foot to climb steel walls, and move through small spaces inside bridges to collect and record inspection data – which is then compared with information from previous visits.
