Researchers uncover Aussie ransomware scourge

[1] Extortionists using a new strain of ransomware have been targeting Australian and New Zealand businesses and individuals, but Deakin University researchers in collaboration with TrendMicro have unraveled the scourge.

[2] The malware, called TorrentLocker, is spread through emails and gives penalty notices that channels users to visit fake Australia Post and NSW Office of State Revenue websites for payment.

[3] The researchers found that TorrentLocker malware disguises itself as CryptoLocker, exploiting its moniker to lure unsuspecting users. However, they did not disclose who is behind the attacks.
